Animal attacks are an uncommon cause of either human fatalities or injuries. The frequency of animal attacks varies with geographical location and historical period. Attacks described in the following article have occurred in historical times with documentation.

Instances of attacks that can be attributed to the animal being confined or 'trapped' prior to an attack have not been included. Serious injuries and fatalities are more likely to be incurred by infants, children and those with limited ability to defend themselves against an animal. Contextually speaking, a person is more likely to be killed by an animal than they are to die from being hit by lightning.
