A rural Queensland show society has agreed to scrap calf scruffing competitions, after animal activists shared a video of the event and labelled it "cruel, unnecessary and terrifying". Calf scruffing involves the handling and throwing of cattle, with competitors required to catch and bring calves to the ground in a position for branding.

Video shared by Animal Liberation Queensland (ALQ) shows competitors at last week's Boonah Show grabbing calves by their heads and pulling them by their tails in an effort to bring them down. A man can also be heard asking a competitor "what's the plan of attack?" "Get him round the arms… round the neck," the competitor responds.
